
This perfect geometric shape symbolizes the center and perfection of the self in all its. In Ensō: Zen Circles of Enlightenment, two regional Zen students and artists, Joseph Duemer and Lynette Monteiro, along with renowned Zen teacher, artist, and scholar Kazuaki Tanahashi, share their journeys toward enlightenment. It has no beginning and no end, with no turns or corners in between. The Heart Sutra, chanted in Zen temples around the world, tells us that form, in fact, is no different from emptiness: The form of the ensō embraces the emptiness inside it. I want to understand how zen and tattoos can work together, but I'm having a hard time figuring it out. But one tattooed is done carefully to imitate the look of a brushstroke and it is permanent. The enso circle symbolizes strength, harmony, enlightenment and the universe. With one broad brush stroke the circle is created, but one segment remains open and imperfect.

As Kazuaki Tanahashi, whose work is featured in the exhibition, explains, “When a line is alive, you feel the breath of the artist as well as the breath of the brush.” An enso created by a brushstroke is unique, imperfect, and represents a particular time. The open circle represents the pursuit of perfection or enlightenment. On the other hand, it is the representation of the totality of the great void.” As a Zen practice, the ensō is painted in one stroke, in one breath, traditionally with black ink on white paper.
